The winter days have quickly passed into spring, bringing forth new life and new beginnings. The sun’s rising point has moved northward along the eastern ridge, and with it, the days have grown longer, the sun brighter and less angled. Another year is underway.

One of my favorite photos of Blynken as a kitten, pushing her brother’s head down to get a better look at the camera.
This is one of my favorite photos of Blynken as a kitten, pushing her brother’s head down to get a better look at the camera. She had a quiet intensity in her gaze, making one feel as if they were being studied. Here is another photo of her as a youngster, trying to figure out what I am up to with the camera.
We said goodbye to Blynken at the end of February. As a kitten, a heart murmur had been detected, but she soon outgrew it, and it remained undetectable on auscultation for many years. She had seen two different veterinarians in the months before her death, one for an exam and rabies vaccine, the second for a dentistry, and no problems were noted with blood work or anesthesia. At the end of February, she was found in the morning with her nose pressed against the window. It seemed she was having trouble breathing. Blynken was taken in immediately on emergency where it was determined she was in left heart failure, and placed in an oxygen cage. The ER vet contacted a cardiologist. Based on his recommendation, a three drug combination from the compounding pharmacy – Pimobendan, Spironolactone and Clopidogrel – was tried. She was kept in the ER overnight. Although she seemed to feel better the next morning and was making biscuits on her blanket, Blynken could not survive outside the oxygen cage and the clot suddenly moved and painfully lodged in a front leg before it could be dissolved. At this point it was agreed it was time to let her go. Our friend and fellow blogger Doug Thomas posted a memorial to Blynken after her death. We are grateful for Doug’s steadfast friendship through good times and hard times.
We all come into this world, and we all leave it after a time, in way or another. Sometimes one is lucky enough to go in their sleep. Although Rick and I know that, and our own time will come eventually, it is never any easier to bear the loss of a loved one, and I have not felt the motivation to write. This post was due to come out a month ago. Goodbye, Blynken. You are missed.
News from the farm
It has been a long, cool transition into spring, randomly punctuated by some unusual warmth. A number of mornings were in the lower 30s to below freezing during the time the plums, pears and cherries were blooming. The black tartarian and a few of the wild cherry hybrids bloomed late, and will probably produce something. We will see what we happens with the apples, which are blooming now during all the rain.
This February I managed to catch a hazelnut bloom after a rainstorm. The tiny red female flower held a droplet of water, reminding me of a gemstone in a setting. Such finds in nature are a reminder that some of the most beautiful things in life are hard to see, often right under our nose or feet. One must take the time to look.
Daffodils planted in late autumn have come and gone. The new planting below was put in for fellow blogger Tim Price’s mother and father. His mother passed away last year. Tim has been a big supporter of other bloggers, and has recently been charting the progress of a new clutch of great horned owl chicks in his area. Tim, a photographer, multi-talented individual and owl whisperer, is from Corrales, New Mexico and lives near the Rio Grande and Sandia mountains.
Tomato, eggplant and pepper starts have been quietly growing in the plant room, and many have already been transplanted into bigger pots, waiting for warmer weather to move them to the garden. As my left arm and shoulder have been slowly healing, I have been able to do more outside, cleaning up and preparing for the season ahead.
Music news (schedule posted on the Performance Schedule page)
I have guarded the arm and shoulder carefully these past months, and I have been able to practice and play out. Should you be in the area and wish to see me play, do check out the performance schedule page and drop by. See previous posts for videos and stories. There will be more next time.
I leave readers with an old Irish blessing. Until we meet again, safe travels to wherever your destination in life may lead you.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Congratulations on managing to write this difficult post about your loss. You do so well with your generous tribute planting. That is a wonderful header photograph.
I am pleased that your shoulder is slowly improving. With love, Derrick XX

Even though I’m not a cat person, I can’t deny how gorgeous your feline members of your family are; beautiful photos. Blynken certainly had her own attractive and bold character. In all the pics, she has an undeniable presence. I’m so sorry you had to make the hard decision to let her go, Lavinia.
But I’m glad to hear that you continue to find beauty in your surroundings, even though it might be hard to see at times. It’s really important to keep searching for that beauty, in these troubled times.
I wish you all the best with your scheduled music performances. One of the joys of summer is attending music festivals. We are certainly looking forward to that, this side, as Covid eases up. Be well!

Excellent advice: “Such finds in nature are a reminder that some of the most beautiful things in life are hard to see, often right under our nose or feet. One must take the time to look.” To the advice that we should stop and smell the roses must be added the encouragement to also look more closely at the roses.

Thanks for stopping by, Laura, it is always a pleasure to see you. Multiple pet losses are an unfortunate side effect of having multiple cats. We didn’t go looking for more cats. Being in a rural area, they have a tendency to just show up needing help or are born somewhere on the property to a feral mother, as was Blynken. The oldest remaining ones are now in their 15 and 16th years, and the two youngest will be 9 in August. Aside from old age (our oldest was 22 when she passed on in 2018), cancer, kidney disease and other maladies can take a toll on the herd. The pandemic has been a strange time on top of all that. Each animal that passes through our lives leaves their mark, their lives and stories all woven into the tapestry of this place we call home.
I am sorry to hear your hand and wrist are acting up and you are in hiatus. I do wish you good luck and you are in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. My shoulder and arm problem has been diagnosed as “impingement syndrome” and I will be getting physical therapy. I was extremely lucky things never got so bad I couldn’t play, although some songs on the Guild 12-string were difficult to do a few months ago, and I had to be careful and take breaks practicing, saving the real push for when I played out. Gardening and heavy lifting were definitely out until recently.
I will by by to catch up with you and others soon. I am checking messages here between outside chores. 🙂
Wishing you a happy spring! Stay well, and heal up that hand and wrist.

Hi Lavinia,
That was a lovely tribute to Blynken, and thank you for including the photos. She was adorable. As you know, I haven’t had this particular experience yet, and I dread it with my entire being. Your post is a reminder that the end can come suddenly and unexpectedly, even with a clean bill of health from the veterinarian, and the takeaway is to appreciate every day with our little friends.
Bud and I will keep you in our thoughts, and we hope you’re doing okay despite the grief.
That’s a beautiful acoustic, by the way. And a 12-string!

Hi Lavinia, So sorry about your Blynken. One year, my vet thought Susie had a heart murmur. Asked about how she was behaving and her activity level, I said Susie was her normal self. It turned out to be how the blood was flowing through her valves. The following year, Susie didn’t have that murmur sound.
I can relate about how things are in a multi-cat household. Everyone occupies a position, so when one goes away, it becomes so quiet for awhile. I hope it didn’t become too quiet after Blynken left.
Glad your arm and shoulder are starting to feel better. It certainly becomes an inconvenience when you want to do some gardening.
Best to all.

I start physical therapy for the shoulder next month, they were booked out a long way. The diagnosis was impingement syndrome. X-rays showed there is also some very mild arthritis in the acromioclavicular joint, but I was told that in itself is not contributing much to the current problem.
Wishing you and your family and friends a happy spring, and a successful competition season with the horses. The girls are excellent riders, trained and prepared. They will do well.

I was so happy to see a post from you, Lavinia, and deeply saddened to read of Blynken’s passing. As you say, the joys of living with animals is knowing that the day of loss will come, but you are so loving and attentive to those who come into your life, there’s no question their lives are bettered.
It’s terribly hard to limit activity, as with your arm. Still, ‘rest’ doesn’t have to mean complete inactivity. I know you’ll be as attentive to your arm as you are to your creatures and gardens. As Julian of Norwich once said (and T.S. Eliot quoted), “All will be well.”

You and Julian of Norwich are right, “all will be well”. The arm will heal, eventually. The weed whacker seems to be a bit hard on it, but I am learning new ways to do tasks that do not tax the shoulder so much. 🙂

I so enjoy your quarterly updates Lavinia, and the way they draw me into the slow cycle of life so close to nature. But of course, I am deeply saddened at the loss of your Blynken. She definitely seemed a character! You have given us a beautiful tribute of your love for her.
My occasional visits to my neighbour’s cat are bearing fruit. Last week she came straight over and settled beside me. Then she happily ‘encouraged’ me to scratch her head. She even rolled onto her back a few times, but I am not so easily fooled by that, haha! She never makes any noise, purr or miaow. Although when I rubbed her chin and throat I could feel her purr vibrating. She loves turning around and putting her butt towards me – I tell her owners that is ‘catspeak’ for ‘do you want to be my friend’? LOL. Anyway, they are quite amazed at our interaction, as she is usually a very self-contained little puss. I wonder if I will get a similar reaction tomorrow. Gosh! It’s hard being rationed to such visits without a pet of my own.

It is always a pleasure to see you, Gwendoline, and I thank you for stopping by and honoring Blynken’s life, and for your kind comments.
I am also quite familiar with the presentation of the cat’s hind end as a sign of trust and friendship, especially the “butt scrunch and tail shake”. I think I read somewhere that the behavior goes back to kittenhood when they present to the mother cat to have their behind inspected and cleaned. 🙂 You have been chosen as a person of interest by your neighbor’s cat, and have been honored. I am sure she will give you more attention on your next visit.
On another note, I will probably be ceasing the blog portion of this site at the end of next year, 2023. I figure 10 years of my ramblings will probably have been enough, family takes up more and more time these days, and there is never enough time for personal projects. I will still try to keep up with all of you as I can. I value my blogging community.
Your book is still on my list.

Thank you for validating my theory Lavinia. I know you have so much experience with the feline world.
I’ll be sorry to see the end of your blogs but totally understand the need to be careful with time. It can be a consuming hobby, and I can never follow all those I would like. There are just not enough hours in the day for all my projects.
And I am grateful you still intend to read my book. But just a trigger warning that there are some confronting elements, so save it for a day you are feeling strong and fortified. xxx Gwendoline

Oh, I’m sorry to hear about your decision to end blogging at the end of 2023 (on Gwen’s comment, I think). I was just thinking about you the other day as I made an adjustment to my blogroll. I was debating if I should put you on there because your posts are more seasonal. I think I will because I missed this blog post since I read by reader, not emails.
And I am so sorry to read about your beautiful Blynken. What a terrible blow.
Since July we have lost 3 cats in our family (2 of ours and my daughter’s who I babysat all the time) and now Tiger Queenie Princess Mimi Josefina is fading. 😦
BTW, Gwen’s book is heartbreaking, but very very good.

Thank you for stopping by, Luanne, and for honoring Blynken’s life. It is always a pleasure to see you no matter what the circumstances. Yes, it was unexpected, and a blow to us. I am so sorry you have lost 3 of your own I have more daffodils coming in to plant this fall, and will plant some for your kitties, too.
I am having trouble keeping up with everyone, and have decided just to do the best I can. Once the last post of my own is up at the end of 2023, I will leave the old posts (10 1/2 years by then) up for people to look through, and only update the other pages as needed. I treasure my blogging community and will continue to be part of the WP community.

I checked the patch of Daffodils , to the memory of your friend ‘s parents
This makes me think of the Spring flowers here in Amiens . At first snowdrop, then muscari, , then crocus , then daffodils and narcisse, then tulips.
June is the month of the roses
As you see we would be able to make a calendar with flowers !! 🙂

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing in Blynken’s life, Wendy, it is always a pleasure to see you. Little Blynken was very much loved and is missed. You are right, it is never easy to lose one. Thank you for your hugs and prayers. I was also stricken with a heart attack a few weeks ago and am healing on that front, too.

Hi Lavinia, so sorry for your loss and not reading this sooner, life is hectic right now as I have to take on multiple jobs to cover the bills as I missed the opera audition season due to travelling performing work away from London auditions last autumn. I’m keeping up with my singing practice hours and learning new repertoire after work and weekends which doesn’t leave much time for blogging sadly.
I went to Romania to plan our wedding blessing there, delayed for two years due to covid, and came back with a serious ear infection which put me out of action for auditions I’d booked. The 💒 wedding blessing is due in a couple of weeks which is exciting, I hope that life on the farm is going well, thank you for keeping up with me even though I have been very negligent to my blog friends, hope you understand.

Charlotte, please do not ever worry about being “late” or missing a post here. My own life is hectic enough I can’t get around to everyone in a timely fashion, and often have to catch up. I enjoy reading about your travels and all the good things you are doing, engaging young and old in your music! Your posts are educational.
I am sorry to hear about the ear infection. I know how those impact singing, and you need to be at your best. I have fallen further behind with everyone myself. About 3 weeks ago I had a heart attack, and was told if I had delayed any further getting to the hospital, I would have been dead. I am home, back to work, and playing music again, though I am trying to maintain a slower pace of life. That is hard, with so much to do here. Stress kills.
Never, never worry! You are always welcome here, and I enjoy seeing your own career blossom.

Oh Lavinia I am sorry to read about your heart attack, thank goodness you didn’t delay in seeking help. My Nana had a funny turn at my brother’s wedding and she put off going to see about it, then when she finally went she had to have three stents she has recovered well but it put the fear into her. I hope that manage to balance everything, sometimes it just feels overwhelming when you have so much to do but don’t feel that you have anything for all that work you are putting in so just look at the positives and enjoy life at a little slower pace.

Lavinia, thank you for checking in with us all. I am so sorry that you had to make that heartbreaking decision to let Blynken pass. You paint a beautiful and vivid picture of his love of life and your love for him. As always nature is there to help ground us and your description of the hazelnut bloom is mesmerising and indeed, what heavenly beauty in just a droplet of water upon the flower. Enjoy your music tour this season – and be careful. Aww … I do love this Irish blessing – it is timeless! x

Reading what you write about your fruit trees, Lavinia, I could say the same thing.
We will have very few pears this year because it has frozen on the flowers.
On the other hand, we have had cherries in abundance (but they were ripe during the hot weather and they deteriorated quickly). We will have apples (probably)
Love ❤

Good to see you again, Michel! It sounds like your summer season is ahead of ours. The cherries on our trees are still green. The pear tree surprised us. I see a number of small green pears at this time.

What a cute trio of kitties, Lavinia. I’m sorry for your loss of Blynken. Saying goodbye to our loved ones is so hard. My husband and I always comfort ourselves by remembering that we gave them wonderful lives in our home that we’ve informally dubbed “Pet Heaven.” 🙂
It was a long slow chilly spring this year. My garden is just starting to show signs of life, and we actually lit a fire in the woodstove a couple of days ago to drive away the morning chill. Hopefully, the silver lining is fewer fires this year. I’m sorry to hear about your fruit trees though. Now that summer is finally smiling on us, enjoy your time outside. Hugs.

Thank you for stopping by and sharing in Blynken’s life, Diana, and thank you so much for the kind comments. She was a dear kitty, and a sweet soul. She is missed.
Spring was long and cool in our part of Oregon as well, and the beginning of summer is off to a cool start except for the recent 90 degree weather we had for a few days. Hopefully fire season will be less severe this year. some of the wild cherry trees seem to have produced a good load of fruit, and it looks like the pear tree will come through after all. We will have enough apples of the ones that flowered this year.
Take care, Diana, and many hugs back to you.
